Bess was a take-charge person who had to have her way. Pam knew that was part of what had driven Bess' husband away. Bess had wallowed in self pity for a long time after the divorce but then she realized that her time was her own.
She decided to get on with things and take charge of her life... and to take charge of Pam's life as well. In a perverse way Pam fulfilled Bess. Bess was a very domineering person and she hadn't been able to dominate her husband, she had only pushed him away. But in the self conscious and weak willed Pam, she had found the perfect friend... the perfect partner. A person who could be manipulated and controlled by the force of her personality.
